Makak made by Sarah Copway (maker confirmed by inscription on lid), RCIN 84338. 17.0 x 16.0 x 10.0 cm. An inscription on the reverse of the lid says "Maple sugar presented his Royal Highness by Sally Copway 1860." This traditional form of makak was used to store maple sugar, manoomin/wild rice and other foods.

Sarah Copway (family name is now Coppaway) was born at Rice Lake. The 1861 census lists her as aged 60, a widow, unable to read or write, and living in a log home with Betsy and John Crowe and family.

Makak fait par Sarah Copway (identité confirmée par inscription sur le couvercle), RCIN 84338. 17 cm x 16 cm x 10 cm. Une inscription au revers du couvercle indique « Le sucre d'érable présenté à son Altesse Royale par Sally Copway 1860 ». Cette forme traditionnelle de makak était utilisée pour stocker le sucre d'érable, manoomin (riz) et d'autres aliments.

Sarah Copway (aujourd’hui écrit Coppaway) est âgée de 60 ans en 1861, veuve, ne sait ni lire ni écrire, et vit dans une maison en rondins avec Betsy et John Crowe et leur famille.
