Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, was 18 years old when Queen Victoria sent him as her representative on the first royal tour of Canada. The tour had many stops from Newfoundland to Sarnia. Every day included ceremonial welcomes, formal dinners, and entertainment. The Prince met Indigenous people along the route and experienced their games, dances and paddling skills. However, their assertions of cultural identity were likely not understood by the Prince and his entourage.
