In 1860, at Rice Lake near Peterborough, Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg people welcomed the young Prince of Wales and presented him with gifts of beautifully quill-worked baskets (makakoon, “muh-kuk-oon”). In 2023, we were delighted to welcome these ancestors home for a visit. This exhibition explores the cultural knowledge, love, respect and diplomacy that went into the makakoon.
En 1860, Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg du lac Rice de la région de Peterborough ont reçu le jeune prince de Galles et lui ont offert des cadeaux, des paniers piqués (makakoon, “muh-kuk-oon”) somptueusement confectionnés. En 2023, nous avons été ravis de la visite de ces Ancêtres chez nous. Cette exposition explore les connaissances culturelles, l’amour, le respect et la diplomatie qui se cachent dans la confection de ces makakoon.

Our traditional territory extends from what is now Hamilton, along the north shore of Lake Ontario past Kingston and then up towards Espanola. Hiawatha is one of the six Michi Saagiig communities.
Our original name is Pamitaashkodeyong, ‘where the rice burns’ or ‘where the tall grass burns,’ because of controlled burning.

Notre territoire traditionnel s’étend de la région de Hamilton, le long de la rive nord du lac Ontario, jusqu’à Kingston et ensuite jusqu’à Espanola. Hiawatha est l’une des six communautés Michi Saagiig.
Notre nom d’origine est
Pamitaashkodeyong, qui signifie « là où le riz brûle » ou « là où l’herbe haute brûle », en raison du brûlage contrôlé.
