Minny Cobierge (Mary Cabbage on the 1851 census) won a prize for the Second Best Pair of Moccasins (worked with Porcupine Quills) at the 1848 Cobourg Fair. In 1861 she was 50, single, and living with Abram, Harriet and Thomas McCue, “all family members.”
Cobierge/Cabbage is an unusual name for the Hiawatha area. Research on this woman by historian Sheryl Dundas (Hiawatha First Nation) suggests that Minny had a brother John Kahbeege who lived at Saugeen. A member of Saugeen First Nation provided a pronunciation of Kaa baa gee. We are continuing to research this unusual name and the family of this artist.
